#EchokeForHere

On the 28th of November, 2021, we commenced our very first token airdrop for the $ECHOKE Social Token. It was anticipated that thousands of users would camp on our website awaiting the countdown to end so they can apply for and claim their tokens. The reception we got was far beyond what we had hoped for. We set out to reward 1,000 winners but ended up with over 350,000 page visits during the 30 hour giveaway period. Over 10,000 new people also signed up onto the Omegoat website during the 30 hours surrounding the airdrop. We had bitten more than we could chew, and our systems felt that.

Our website crashed immediately the countdown was over. Many users couldn't visit the site at all. Those that could were not able to submit the form needed to claim the tokens. Those who managed to submit the claiming form waited for hours for their SMS OTP to come in. It was unpleasant for everyone; but how do you really prepare for a giveaway announced by Davido? There will be inevitable server crashes. The saving grace in this story is of course the Omegoat technical team who stayed up past midnight to ensure that the systems run smoothly.

We were not able to reward everyone on the evening of the 28th because our servers kept giving up. We had to continue the next day. It took a full 30 hours to reward all the 1,000 winners. The process was unpleasant, but we still got to reward all those we set out to. Congrats to all who got their tokens. People who were not very lucky this time around can try again next month. If you visit the Omegoat website now, you'll see a countdown leading up to morning of Christmas (DEC 25). See you then. In the next few days and weeks, we will be giving gifts to the community, and you would need the $ECHOKE tokens to claim them.

Things we're proud of.

  1. Over 450,000 page visits in just a week of launching.
  2. Over 20,000 people have signed up to our platform in that same period.
  3. We've rewarded our first batch of token holders, 1,000 members deep.
  4. Our Telegram group has surpassed 13,000 members.

Things we're not so proud of.

  1. Our website gave up on most users. They couldn't access it or fill the forms.
  2. Many users had to wait for hours just to receive the SMS OTP. Some did not even receive it at all.
  3. The claim form kept reporting a 'server error' to most users. This was quite frustrating.
  4. Our intention was to give each winner 9,000 $ECHOKE and a tiny amount of BNB too. A good number of winners got both. Some got just the $ECHOKE and no BNB. Some got just the tiny BNB and no ECHOKE. That's totally our bad.

Things we want to do better.

  1. We will prepare to have autoscaling and high API request limits for our future airdrops. This should help the site crashes. It's still Davido's project, so just how much can we plan to prevent crashes?
  2. Our SMS third-party seemed to have a problem delivering most of the OTP messages to users in time. A solution would be to do away with the OTP requirement completely or move to another SMS API. What do you suggest?
  3. This airdrop was shared on a 'first come, first serve' basis. We do realise now that this may not be the most efficient way when it comes to rewarding our more loyal / enthusiastic patrons. We will come up with a more fair way of distributing the tokens in future giveaways.
  4. The issue of some winners getting no BNB with their $ECHOKE and vice versa is very likely a code problem and we are going to fix it.

We are building this community from the ground up, so let us expect a few hiccups down the line. Correcting these mistakes is what makes us stronger.

If you know the hashtag, please say it back.
